Edema

Edema is the buildup of excessive amounts of fluid in the body, usually in the cells themselves. The fluid is generally water and salt, and is often associated with allergic reactions to food or environmental toxins. It can occur in the face, hands, feet, knees and other extremities, but can also cause brain swelling that leads to headaches, behavioral changes, and memory problems. Symptoms include:

  • Bloating and swelling of the face, fingers, hands, and legs
  • Bloating of the abdomen (known as ascites)
  • Overall weight gain
  • Lung fluid buildup with shortness of breath

What Causes Edema?

Edema is associated with the cardiovascular system and the kidneys, and is usually caused by heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. It can sometimes be caused a reaction to low air pressure in airplanes, especially on long flights. Likewise, climate changes can cause edema in certain people. Other causes include:

  • Poor kidney health and problems related to protein absorption
  • Vitamin B deficiencies
  • Tumors in the groin or pelvis
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Heredity (especially with edema of the legs)

Treatments for Edema

Edema often can be reduced or minimized by dietary changes. Eat foods high in water content, such as cucumbers, apples, potatoes, grapes, beets, onion, cabbage, citrus fruits, and watermelon. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, salt, fried foods, milk, and dairy products. Also reduce meat, sugar, processed grains, white flour, and pickled foods. Hydrate yourself with a Carbon Activated Water (CAW).

Herbal remedies include dandelion leaf, which is rich in potassium, and horse  chestnut seed extract. Supplement with a good vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin B6, pantothetic acid, and potassium. Free form amino acids and alfalfa tablets may also be helpful. Here are the keys:

  • Eat healthy, nutrient rich foods or find a good nutrient  dense super supplement.
  • Keep your body hydrated with high water content foods and liquids.
  • Take B  complex and C vitamins, potassium and omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Consider a regular body detoxification practice, such as hydrotherapy or massage.
