The 411 on Prop 65

AKA: The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act

Let’s face it….laws can prove to be tricky to understand sometimes. When it comes to Prop 65, some of the language can even be frightening. We hope it will be to your relief that we’ve already done our homework on this one and want to share with you (in understandable language!) what exactly Prop 65 is. If  you have any questions after reading please feel free to contact our support team at support@bokusuperfood.com.

Proposition 65, or The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, was approved in 1986 by California voters to address concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals in drinking water known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The proposition specifically prohibits businesses from releasing potentially harmful chemicals into drinking water and requires them to disclose the presence of those chemicals on their premises.

The ever growing list of aforementioned chemicals is updated at least once a year by law and has now grown to include over 800 chemicals.

With this proposition, premises and products thought to contain above “safe” levels of these chemicals are required to state in plain sight of the customer: “Warning: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or reproductive harm.”

Fast forward several decades since the inauguration of this proposition and Californians now see Prop 65 warnings everywhere: from Starbucks to Disneyland, from the gas pump to your own apartment building.

By far the most unsettling ramification of this proposition is the waive of labels being forced upon the good guys: Organic brands selling wholesome, naturally occurring nutritious products. If you haven’t already, get ready to see an influx of frightening labels plastered among your favorite organic brands anywhere they are sold in California.

Absolutely! BōKU® sources our ingredients from the most PRISTINE places on earth. Many of these more exotic countries, such as Peru, tend to be higher in volcanic soil which has naturally higher soil minerals levels like lead and cadmium. A number of super foods (such as maca root, golden berries and cacao nibs) originally come from Peru, giving them a naturally occurring higher level of these soil minerals that occur on the “chemical list” created by prop 65. We can assure you when you consume BōKU® not only are you consuming a safe product, you are consuming the BEST product for your overall health.
