FAQs – Super Cacao Nibs

Here at BōKU®, we firmly believe in the power of whole, healing foods. When it comes to organic food versus non-organic, the choice is easy for us. For something to be Certified Organic, it has to meet certain criteria that we believe all food should be upheld to.

To be certified organic the food must…

– Contain NO GMO’s! What’s a GMO you ask? It stands for Genetically Modified Organism. We could really go on all day about why we do not want them in our products, and especially do not want to feed them to our wonderful customers. To learn more about GMO’s, see our FAQ “What is a GMO?”

– Be grown and harvested in a safe and sustainable manner, with NO artificial fertilizers, NO artificial pesticides and NO irradiation!

– Contain NO artificial flavors, colors or preservatives!

Why else should you choose organic?

– Organic agriculture preserves natural resources and biodiversity.

– It supports animal health and welfare (for meat products, certified organic means they have not be subjected to growth hormones or harmful antibiotics).

– Organic foods have been shown to have better nutritional value than conventionally grown food.

There are more differences between cacao and cocoa than just the spelling, at least in how we use the words. The beans come from the Theobroma cacao tree, and the word cacao comes from the Olmec people in what is now Mexico. It’s actually thought that the spelling cocoa originated as a mistake that stuck. So the two are technically referring to the same thing, but we generally use cocoa to refer to a more processed chocolate product with added sugar, versus the raw cacao, which has no sugar.
Cacao has been consumed for its invigorating and healthy properties for generations in Mexican, Central and South American cultures. Like all cacao products, Cacao nibs deliver antioxidants. Cacao also has fiber and a number of vital minerals – including magnesium and iron. Cacao also delivers unique and potent chemical alkaloids including anandamine, theobromine and phenylethylamine.
No, cacao nibs do not contain caffeine. They contain Theobromine, which is similar to caffeine, but it does not have the same stimulating properties.

Cacao nibs are very versatile! You can eat them plain as a snack, add them to your favorite yogurt/oatmeal or use them in a smoothie! Another great use is to add them to trail mix, or use them to replace chocolate chips in baked goods for a healthy alternative!

Most people assume that since cacao nibs are derived as a kind of chocolate that they are sweet like candy. BUT cacao nibs have a very unique and natural flavor. They taste almost like unsweetened dark chocolate alone, but ours have a light layer of organic coconut palm sugar which gives them a perfectly balanced taste. They have somewhat of a nutty texture and are accompanied by a nice little crunch!
Also known as nature’s chocolate chips, cacao nibs are made from pure cacao beans that come straight out of the tropical cacao fruit. Cacao was a culinary treasure to Mesoamericans for thousands of years and touted as the “Food of the Gods” for its superior nutritional profile and exceptional flavor. Cacao Nibs are crunchy chocolate just as nature intended, in an easy to use and versatile form.
