Macular Degeneration

One of the most common eye and sight degenerative problems, macular degeneration is associated with age, particularly with those over 55. In macular degeneration, the retina is slowly destroyed, leading to first a lack of focus and eventually blindness. There are two types of macular degeneration:

  • Dry degeneration, the most common type, shows up with a buildup of debris beneath the retina.
  • Wet degeneration is the result of overgrowth of the blood vessels beneath the retina, causing leakage that causes scar tissue.

In either case, vision becomes blurry, especially when viewing objects close at hand, and symptoms often includes the appearance of dark spots in the field of vision. It is a degenerative disease that is avoidable or, at the very least, deterable.

What Causes Macular Degeneration?

Poor vision does not have to occur with age, as the causes are definable and identifiable. For the most part, vision loss is caused by free radicals combined with poor circulation that damage and break down the eyes. Here are some specific things that can lead to macular degeneration:

  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Too much ultraviolet light
  • Tobacco
  • Digestive problems
  • Pollution and environmental toxins
  • Heavy metal poisoning from food sources
  • High blood pressure
  • Pharmaceutical drugs

Treatments for Macular Degeneration

First and foremost, increase dietary antioxidants to help strengthen your cells and reduce damage from free radicals, which are created by unhealthy foods and environmental toxins, smoking, drinking, and overeating. Lutein can help reverse the disease. Take 6 mg a day, along with the antioxidant astaxanthin, which can move across the bloodbrain barrier to restore cell strength. Chelation therapy has also been shown to help macular degeneration. Also, carotenoid antioxidants are helpful to the eyes and can be found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, carrots, blueberries, and lightly cooked eggs. Here are some more treatments:

  • Zeaxanthin can be taken in supplement form, or you can get it in corn, romaine lettuce, and tangerines.
  • Bilberry improves capillary circulation throughout the eye.
  • Take vitamins A, C with bioflavonoids, E, and B2, plus the minerals zinc, selenium, and chromium.
  • Use some simple eye exercises, including rolling your eyes, and moving your focus from near to far.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Avoid sugars and foods that turn to sugar, such as simple carbohydrates and alcohol.
  • Avoid animal products.
