Super Cacao Nibs FAQs

Cacao Nibs

The botanical name for cacao is ‘theobroma’ which translates into ‘food of the gods.’ Used as a currency by ancient Meso America people, cacao helps the body to trigger a ‘feeling of well-being.’ Cacao is not to be confused with chocolate, even though all chocolate has a small percentage of cacao in it. However, most chocolates are filled with oils, milk products and additives, which destroy the health contributing benefits of cacao and cacao’s intrinsically rich antioxidant roster. Antioxidants have been purported to help safeguard the body from aging.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are more differences between cacao and cocoa than just the spelling, at least in how we use the words. The beans come from the Theobroma cacao tree, and the word cacao comes from the Olmec people in what is now Mexico. It’s actually thought that the spelling cocoa originated as a mistake that stuck. So the two are technically referring to the same thing, but we generally use cocoa to refer to a more processed chocolate product with added sugar, versus the raw cacao, which has no sugar.

Cacao has been consumed for its invigorating and healthy properties for generations in Mexican, Central and South American cultures. Like all cacao products, Cacao nibs deliver antioxidants. Cacao also has fiber and a number of vital minerals – including magnesium and iron. Cacao also delivers unique and potent chemical alkaloids including anandamine, theobromine and phenylethylamine.

No, cacao nibs do not contain caffeine. They contain Theobromine, which is similar to caffeine, but it does not have the same stimulating properties.

Cacao nibs are very versatile! You can eat them plain as a snack, add them to your favorite yogurt/oatmeal or use them in a smoothie! Another great use is to add them to trail mix, or use them to replace chocolate chips in baked goods for a healthy alternative!

Most people assume that since cacao nibs are derived as a kind of chocolate that they are sweet like candy. BUT cacao nibs have a very unique and natural flavor. They taste almost like unsweetened dark chocolate alone, but ours have a light layer of organic coconut palm sugar which gives them a perfectly balanced taste. They have somewhat of a nutty texture and are accompanied by a nice little crunch!

Also known as nature’s chocolate chips, cacao nibs are made from pure cacao beans that come straight out of the tropical cacao fruit. Cacao was a culinary treasure to Mesoamericans for thousands of years and touted as the “Food of the Gods” for its superior nutritional profile and exceptional flavor. Cacao Nibs are crunchy chocolate just as nature intended, in an easy to use and versatile form.

I bought these last month and really like them. I get a super sweet tooth sometimes at night. I just grab a handful of these Nibs and I’m fine. Its a lot better then grabbing ice cream or a cookie. I have bought Cacoa at a big health food chain store before and there is no comparison. Thanks Boku. really Love your products. (I have 4 auto ship)

These little cacao bits are so good. I put them in my oatmeal, I eat them alone. My 1 year old grandson likes them too. I am ordering more. Cocoa is very good food. Thank you, Boku!

This is awesome on top of yogurt. You can even eat it plain, but it tasted awesome on top of my plain yogurt. These are known as Nature’s Chocolate chips. It’s funny I’m not a huge fan of Chocolate Chips, but these were very tasty!

I’m OBSESSED with these! I eat them straight from the bag. They give me my choco fix along with a little pick-me-up in the afternoon. Perfect snack.

  7. Rated 5 out of 5

I love cacao nibs, and I mixed some of these in my granola for a bit of extra crunch.

  8. The cacao nibs taste great. I ate them plain but they would be awesome in a trail mix.
