The Easter Bunny will be hippity-hopping into homes across the globe in a matter of days. Chances are, in the midst of holiday preparations, you’ll gather the family for a beloved tradition: dyeing Easter eggs in vibrant hues.
Up your egg-dyeing ante this year by forgoing store-bought egg dyeing kits — which are chock full of chemicals and artificial dyes. Instead, swap out the cardboard-packaged dyes for an all-natural egg-dyeing alternative.
Here’s how to do it:
These foods and spices will color your eggs in the following shades:
Pink to red: Red beets
Pale purple to red: Red onion skins
Pink to purple: Raspberries or blackberries
Orange: Chili powder
Bright yellow: Turmeric or cumin
Yellow to dark orange: Yellow onion skins
Yellow-green: Yellow or green apple peels
Green: Spinach
Blue: Red cabbage
Ingredients and Materials
- 4 cups veggies/fruits or 4 Tbs. of spices from the above list
- White vinegar
- Water
- Pot
- Strainer
To Make the Dye:
- Combine 4 cups of chopped fruits or veggies (or 4 Tbs. of spices), with 4 cups of water and 2 Tbs. white vinegar. If you need more water to cover the ingredients, proportionally add more vinegar to the mix.
- Bring to a boil and let simmer for 30 minutes.
- Pour liquid through strainer and into a bowl. This is your dye.
To Dye the Eggs:
- Place eggs in the dye and allow to soak overnight, testing occasionally to check the color.
- If the eggs aren’t as dark as you’d like after soaking, transfer the eggs and dye to a saucepan and simmer for 30 minutes.
We hope you have just as much fun as we did during this project! We’d love to see how yours turn out, feel free to post your naturally dyed Easter Eggs and tag us @bokusuperfood!
